What are the risks of breast reduction? The decision to undergo breast reduction is very personal. You should carefully consider whether the benefits outweigh the risks and potential complications of the procedure.
Your plastic surgeon and the plastic surgery team will explain the risks of the operation in detail. You will be asked to sign a consent form to ensure that you fully understand the procedure and the possible risks or potential complications.
Possible risks of breast reduction include:
Allergic reactions to tape, sutures, adhesives, blood products, topical preparations or injected agents Risks with anaesthesia Bleeding (haematoma) Blood clots Breast asymmetry Irregularities in the contour and shape of the breast Changes in the sensitivity of the nipple or breast, which can be either temporary or permanent Damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles and lungs, which can be temporary or permanent Deep vein thrombosis and cardiac and pulmonary complications Excessive firmness in the breast Fat tissue under the skin can die (fat necrosis) Fluid accumulation Infection Persistent pain Problems with wound healing Need for additional surgical procedures Possible inability to breastfeed Potential tissue loss in areas where the incisions meet Risk of partial or total loss of nipple and areola Skin discolouration, permanent pigment changes, swelling and bruising Unfavourable scarring You should know that:
Breast reduction can interfere with certain diagnostic procedures Breast and nipple piercing can cause an infection Your ability to breastfeed after mammoplasty reduction may be limited; talk to your doctor if you plan to breastfeed a child Breast reduction can be performed at any age, but is best done when your breasts are fully developed Changes in the breasts during pregnancy can alter the results of previous breast reduction, as well as significant weight fluctuations The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with breast reduction in a single surgical procedure and another operation may be needed.
How should I prepare for breast reduction? Before a breast reduction, you may be asked to:
Take tests or undergo a medical evaluation Take certain medications or adjust your current medications Do a mammogram before surgery Stop smoking well before breast reduction surgery Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding You will receive written instructions about:
What to do on the day of surgery Postoperative care and follow-up You should arrange for a friend or family member to pick you up after the surgery and stay with you the first night.
Breast Reduction – How does it work? Breast reduction surgery is usually performed through incisions on the breasts with surgical removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin.
In some cases, excess fat may be removed through liposuction in conjunction with the excision technique described below. If breast size is largely due to fatty tissue and excess skin is not a factor, liposuction alone may be used in the procedure for breast reduction.
The technique used to reduce the size of your breasts will be determined by your individual condition, breast composition, desired amount of reduction, your personal preferences and the surgeon’s advice.
Step 1 – Anaesthesia
Medication is given for your comfort during breast reduction surgery.
Step 2 – The incision
Incision options include:
A circular pattern around the areola
The incision lines that remain are visible and permanent scars, although they are usually well hidden under a swimsuit or bra.
A keyhole or racquet-shaped pattern with an incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast fold
Step 3 – Removing tissue and repositioning
After the incision is made, the nipple is repositioned (remaining tethered to its original blood and nerve supply). The areola is reduced if necessary by excising skin around the nipple.
Underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted and shaped. Sometimes, for extremely large breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast (free nipple transplant).
Step 4 – Closing the incisions
The incisions are joined together to reshape the now smaller breast. Sutures are layered deep inside the breast tissue to create and support the newly formed breasts; surgical tape closes the skin. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and improve significantly over time.
Step 5 – See the results
The results of your breast reduction surgery are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will subside and incision lines will fade.
What can I expect after breast reduction? Many patients have questions about recovery from breast reduction surgery.
After your breast reduction is complete, you will be given a dressing or bandage around your breasts. An elastic bandage or support bra is used to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal.
A small, thin tube may temporarily be placed under the skin to drain excess blood or fluid that may collect.
You will receive specific instructions for recovery after breast reduction which may include:
How to take care of your breasts after breast reduction A pain relief schedule with instructions on how to take painkillers to avoid pain breakthroughs Specific issues to be aware of Time for follow-up Things to consider after your surgery It is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions. It is important that the surgical incisions are not exposed to excessive force, abrasion or movement during the healing period. You will receive specific instructions on how to take care of yourself and minimise risks after the operation.
What results should I expect after breast reduction? The results of breast reduction will be long-lasting. Your new breast size should help to relieve you from pain and physical limitations experienced before breast reduction.
But over time, your breasts may change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and gravity.
