On the Day of Surgery at Strandkliniken

It is important that you are calm and relaxed before the operation. Please arrive in good time! You will receive pre-medication, which requires some time to take effect.

FASTING

For anaesthesia and sedation, you must fast for at least 6 hours before anaesthesia, i.e., neither eat nor drink.

For local anaesthesia, you must fast for 2 hours before the operation, i.e., you cannot eat or drink.

MAKE-UP AND PERFUME

Do not use any make-up, skin lotion, or perfume on the day of surgery.

SHOWER AND CLOTHES

It is sufficient that you shower and wash yourself with liquid soap and put on clean clothes in the morning before you come for the surgery.

Please come in comfortable clothes and shoes. You may feel stiff and have difficulty moving after surgery.

Avoid backpacks, etc., if you are not being picked up. A cabin bag with wheels is preferable.

GLASSES/CONTACT LENSES

If you usually wear contact lenses, wear glasses on the day of surgery. If you must use your lenses, do not forget to bring lens fluid and the container.

VALUABLES/JEWELLERY/PIERCINGS

The clinic is NOT responsible for lost valuables. Leave valuables such as rings, earrings, and watches, etc., at home. If you have a piercing, you may need to remove it before surgery.

MEALS

After the surgery, we offer refreshments; tea, coffee, juice, and sandwiches with cheese and/or ham.

For patients staying overnight, we provide warm meals in the evening.

If you have allergies, eat a special diet, or for religious reasons do not eat certain foods, we recommend that you bring your own refreshments/meal to eat after the surgery.

CAR/MOTORCYCLE/BICYCLE

You are not allowed to drive a car, motorcycle, or bicycle for 48 hours after surgery when you have been anaesthetised or given sedatives.

We do not recommend driving a car for the first 2 weeks after surgery, due to the risk of bleeding and strain on the surgical wounds.

LEAVING, PICKING UP, AND VISITING

It is fine to bring a family member or friend on the day of the operation, but considering other patients who have or will be operated on and the risk of infection, relatives and friends cannot stay at the clinic. They must leave the clinic after registration and can return when it’s time to go home.

For the same reasons, we also do not allow any visits during your stay at the clinic.

When picking up, we ask that the person picking you up announces their arrival at the reception.

It is difficult to give an exact time for when you will be discharged after surgery.

As a rule, the following times apply: After anaesthesia and sedation, 3-4 hours. After local anaesthesia, 1-2 hours.

The exact time will be announced on the day of the surgery. Overnight patients are discharged around 08:30 the day after surgery.

We do not recommend that you go home by yourself after the surgery. Arrange well in time with a relative or friend to pick you up when it’s time to go home.

You should not be alone the first night at home.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE DAY

When you arrive at the clinic, you register at the reception by showing identification.

After that, you will change into surgery attire. You get a locker to lock in your belongings while you are here. Keep the key with you at your bed in the surgical department.

Once you have changed, you will go to the surgical department. Here you meet our surgical team.

While waiting for surgery, you will fill in a health declaration that you and the anaesthetist will go through, and you will receive pre-medication.

Before the operation, you meet your surgeon. You are photographed, and the doctor makes the necessary markings for the surgery.

After the operation, you stay in our surgical department/recovery room, which is supervised by our surgical team. We do not have private rooms. Our surgical department is an open ward with screens for privacy between the beds. (Our team thus oversees all patients.)

SURGICAL TEAM Our surgical team consists of highly qualified personnel with extensive experience in their areas of specialization. On-site, you will have your surgeon, anesthesiologist, anesthesia nurse, surgical nurse, and assistant nurse. They will take care of you during your time at the clinic.

DRESSINGS After the surgery, if necessary, you will receive a dressing, and/or a soft bra, girdle, corset, compresses, and/or tape. We will tell you how to manage these on the day of the surgery.

At the clinic, you can buy the bra or extra girdle that you need to use for a period after your surgery during a follow-up visit. The price for the bra is 500 SEK and the girdle is 350 SEK.

PAIN RELIEF You will receive a schedule for pain relief. If needed, you will be given morphine tablets, and if necessary, an electronic prescription for pain relief tablets.

Take the prescribed stronger pain relief tablets as needed. Different patients experience varying levels of pain, but it usually decreases after a few days. Once the prescribed tablets are finished, you can take painkillers like Alvedon (which is not a blood thinner).

It hurts after surgery. Pain relief is to make the pain manageable.

Contact us if they are not sufficient against the pain. A warning about blood-thinning medications such as Ibuprofen, Trombyl, Voltaren, Naproxen, Magnecyl. Do not take any medicines without consulting your surgeon.

If your pain increases some days after the surgery, please contact the clinic at 08-21 91 91.

Note: We do not write any prescriptions in advance.

OVERNIGHT STAY For an overnight stay, bring your toothbrush, toothpaste, toiletry bag, and charger for your phone. You will be discharged by 10:00 AM the day after surgery.
